The trilogy exposes the vulnerability of its characters, who although are protected by their wealth up to a point, do not feel the security they so greatly desire. They have money but they don’t really know where it comes from or whether it will continue to appear. They have emotions but they don’t really know how to express them, and the war could mean the loss of everything they hold dear. These books are not cosy at all.
