And yet its position in the history of early Northern painting remains unclear because of fundamental over authorship and dating of the manuscript. The problems have been reviewed many times but the major ones may be briefly summarized as follows : Most (but not all) scholars have concurred in the identification of the manuscript with an item in the Duke's 1402 inventory. The artist is identified in the inventory list as Jacquemart de Hesdin, an active in the court of the Duc de Berry at the turn of the century. The manuscript, however, is composed of two groups of miniatures, which differ markedly in style.
