James Russell (inventor)
American inventor (born )
James T. Russell (born ) is an American inventor. He earned a BA in physics from Reed College in Portland in He joined General Electric's nearby labs in Richland, Washington, where he initiated many types of experimental instrumentation. He designed and built the first electron beam welder.[1]
In , Russell joined the Pacific Northwest National Laboratory of Battelle Memorial Institute in Richland. There, in , Russell invented the overall concept of optical digital recording and playback.[1] He built prototypes, and the first was operating in In , , his invention was viewed by about companies, including Philips and Sony, and more than descriptive brochures were distributed.[citation needed] The concept was picked up by many technical and media magazines beginning in [citation needed].
In , Russell received The Vollum Award from Reed College.[2]
As of , Russell was consulting from an in-home lab, in Bellevue, Washington.[3]

James Russell
James T. Rusell was a classical music fan. In the early 60s, the time when Rock n roll was young and Frank Sinatra still the king of pop, there wasnt a single radio station playing classical music in Richland, Washington, where Russel lived.
Without any other classical music source, he became obsessed with preserving his LPs so they wouldnt deteriorate. Russell tried cactus spines instead of steel on his record players and it worked ok, but he still hated the snapping, the cracks and the pops of these recordings. After 15 years thinking in how to improve the sound out of an LP, he realised that a better music format was needed.
With his physics degree and motivation to technological improvements, he had invented computer controls for test reactors in the Nuclear plant he was working for and expressed his concern about vinyl.
When Batelle Memorial Institute took over General Electric as the manager for Russells lab, they were more receptive to his determination about fixing his classical records, even though this had nothing to do with nuclear physics.
His first big idea was to use optics in order to avoid the static of dust and foreign particles in the needle. The problem was that this mechanical-optical structure was too
