ON STAGE about Karole Armitage. Long ago, in the 1980s, Karole Armitage was the guerrilla girl of downtown dance: she danced on point to shattering punk music; she assaulted classical tastes with brazen sexuality. Her career followed the roller-coaster trajectory of the times. At 25, she formed her own company; six years later, she choreographed a piece for Mikhail Baryshnikov. But by the end of the decade she was a memory. Her funding dried up after the stockmarket crash of 1987, and then bad reviews finished her off. As if this weren't enough, she was dropped from Madonna's "Blonde Ambition" tour. As a vagabond choreographer and dancer in Europe, she began to envision work that would capture the "hypnotic acceleration" of the decade that had made her, so briefly, a star. On October 16th, the Brooklyn Academy of Music will be presenting the American premiere of "The Predators' Ball," a two-and-a-half-hour spectacle based on the life of Michael Milken, the disgraced junk-bond king and archetypical figure of the age of excess.
