A 45-year-old woman was killed in her Sylmar home last night, the apparent victim of a domestic violence incident, according to police.
The couple’s adult son called 911 just before 9 p.m. to report that he heard gunshots inside the family’s home in the 14000 block of Herron Street, according to a statement.
When officers arrived, they found the victim lying in the living room. She had been shot multiple times, police said. Her husband was in one of the home’s bedrooms.
“(The officers’) first thought was the suspect might be lying in wait for the officers, or he had run out the back door,” Lt. Paul Vernon of LAPD’s Mission Division said in a written statement. “But instead, they found the man lying on a mattress in a bedroom. It seemed he was waiting for police, and gave up without a struggle.”
Vernon said a Colt .45 was recovered at the scene and no one else was injured, although a bullet pierced the wall of a neighboring home. A note written in Spanish was also found near the suspect.
“This shooting could have been much worse, as at least one bullet passed from one house into the neighbor’s house, through several walls, narrowly missing the resident,” he said. “Also, as is common, alcohol played a part in this shooting. The suspect admitted he had been drinking heavily

Dr. Marinich, a proud native of Hamilton, Ohio, was a passionate educator who left an indelible mark on both his students and colleagues. His unexpected passing has deeply saddened the Miami University community, where he was known for his dynamic teaching, scholarly contributions, and caring mentorship.
Dr. Marinich’s academic journey began at Miami University, where he earned his Bachelor’s degree in Finance in 1999. He later pursued further education, obtaining a Master of Science in Accounting from the University of Cincinnati in 2008 and a Ph.D. in Accounting from Michigan State University in 2003.
Returning to Miami University in 2013, Dr. Marinich became a beloved professor, inspiring generations of students with his engaging courses and thoughtful research. Outside of the classroom, he was actively involved in his community, offering his expertise to local initiatives.
