In a new book, A Window to Heaven, Patrick Dean, T’06, explores the life of Hudson Stuck, an 1892 graduate of the University of the South’s School of Theology, who is best known for organizing and co-leading the first team to summit North America’s tallest mountain, Denali, in 1913. Dean investigates what drove Stuck, who was almost 50 years old at the time, to put himself through the misery and risk of summiting the remote and treacherous 20,000-foot mountain. The answer that emerges from the pages reveals a man wired for adventure and fueled by an intense desire to live a life of “usefulness to others.”
Stuck was born in 1863 in Paddington, London, England. At the time, London was already densely populated by millions of people, and had been the largest city in the world for much of the 19th century. Leben
[Bearbeiten | Quelltext bearbeiten]Hudson Stuck wurde in England geboren und am King’s College London unterrichtet, bevor er 1885 in die Vereinigten Staaten emigrierte. Dort lebte er zunächst in San Angelo. 1889 begann er ein Studium der Theologie an der University of the South in Sewanee, Tennessee. Nach dem Studienabschluss wurde er zum Priester einer Episkopalkirche ordiniert und übernahm eine Stelle als Rektor in der Grace Episcopal Church in Cuero.
1894 wurde er der Dekan an der „Cathedral Church of Saint Matthew“ in Dallas. 1904 legte er dieses Amt nieder, um in der Diözese Alaska eine Stelle als Erzdiakon anzutreten.[1]
Stuck war begeisterter Bergsteiger. Er war Mitglied der Expedition, der 1913 die Erstbesteigung des Denali gelang, des höchsten Bergs Nordamerikas (damals auch Densmore's Mountain). Seine Erlebnisse als Naturforscher und Missionar beschrieb er in mehreren Büchern. Er war zudem der Gründer einer Bibliothek in Fairbanks und eines Krankenhauses in Fort Yukon.
