    Gore, do you remember the first time you met Norman?

    Gore Vidal: I was taken to meet Norman by Marc Brandel, a novelist of the day. A very funny writer with a morbid sense of humor who decided to bring us together A memorable occasion, he thought, and it was so memorable I remember nothing else about it — other than it took place.

    Norman Mailer: No, I remember one line of dialogue. I remember you wagging your finger at me and saying, "Mailer, how long did your grandparents live?" And I said, "Well, they died in their late sixties." And you said, "I've got you! My grandparents are particularly long-lived and I'm going to outlive you. [Laughs] And let me assure you, Mailer, there's only one thing that counts. It's who lives to write the verdict on the others." [Laughs]

    Vidal: I must say I was — how shall I say? — prescient. That could have been in my mind. But I didn't know I was speaking my mind in those days.

    Mailer: You were.

    Vidal: The survivor usually wins. I think that is true.

    Abstract: Late in life, Mailer opened a final dialogue with his compatriots when he published two nonfiction books on American politics and democracy—Why Are We at War? and The Big Empty. It is striking how Mailer returns in these late nonfiction works to many of the questions the founding fathers and mothers faced in the eighteenth century. By 2018 American citizens had come to believe that our democracy was in crisis. Into that crisis, historian Joseph Ellis extended the Founders’ dialogues to us in American Dialogue: The Founders and Us. Mailer and Ellis cover much similar territory as they awaken us to our democratic fundamentals by both considering our fragile democracy, our economic inequality, and our foreign policy.
